Brand Comparison

Hearing Aid Brands

An honest comparison of the three hearing aid brands we fit at Florida Hearing Matters — Phonak, Oticon, and ReSound — and how we choose the right one for each patient.

Florida Hearing Matters works with three of the world’s most clinically respected hearing aid manufacturers: Phonak, Oticon, and ReSound. Each has a distinct sound philosophy, distinct strengths in specific listening environments, and distinct accessory ecosystems. None is “the best” in absolute terms — the right brand for you is the one that matches your hearing pattern, your lifestyle, and your preferences. Here’s an honest overview.

Why We Don’t Sell “Just One Brand”

Some practices commit to a single manufacturer because of volume discounts. We don’t. Working with multiple brands means we can recommend genuinely the right device for each patient — not just the device our supplier has on the shelf. Patients often try different brands during the 60-day satisfaction period to find the right match, and we welcome that.

Phonak

Swiss manufacturer, owned by Sonova. Known for an exceptionally crisp, intelligible sound profile that prioritizes speech understanding in challenging environments. Phonak’s newer platforms (Audéo Lumity, Sphere) include their AutoSense technology, which automatically detects what kind of acoustic environment you’re in — quiet conversation, restaurant, car ride, music — and adjusts the device’s programming on the fly. Their universal Bluetooth connectivity (works with any phone, not just iPhone) is best-in-class.

Phonak is also the manufacturer of Lyric, the only extended-wear hearing aid on the market. Read more about Lyric →

Phonak strengths

  • Speech-in-noise performance — particularly noisy restaurants and group conversation
  • Universal Bluetooth (works with iPhone and Android equally well)
  • Roger remote microphone system for difficult listening situations
  • Lyric for patients who want truly invisible, set-and-forget hearing
  • Robust app ecosystem and remote programming

Oticon

Danish manufacturer, owned by Demant. Pioneer of the “BrainHearing” design philosophy — the idea that hearing aids should preserve the natural complexity of a sound scene rather than aggressively narrow focus to one speaker. Their newer platforms (Real, More, Intent) use deep neural networks trained on millions of real-world sound samples to deliver remarkably natural soundscapes. Patients who care about music or who want a less “processed” sound often prefer Oticon.

Oticon strengths

  • Natural, full-bandwidth sound — especially for music and complex environments
  • BrainHearing approach — preserves spatial and contextual cues
  • MoreSound Intelligence neural network processing
  • Excellent rechargeable battery options
  • ON app for smartphone control

ReSound

Danish manufacturer, owned by GN Group. Known for very natural directional hearing — the way you sense whether a sound is coming from your left, right, in front, or behind you. ReSound was the first to ship Made for iPhone hearing aids and continues to lead in iOS-native integration. Their newer platforms (Nexia, OMNIA) handle wind noise particularly well, which matters in South Florida and on the boat.

ReSound strengths

  • Spatial awareness — locating sounds in three dimensions
  • iPhone-native streaming and control
  • Wind-noise handling
  • Natural sound for outdoor environments
  • Strong tinnitus management features

How We Choose for You

During your fitting consultation, Dr. Rossetti walks through:

  • Your audiogram pattern. Some platforms handle steep high-frequency loss better than others. Some are better for asymmetric losses.
  • Your phone. If you’re an iPhone user, ReSound’s native MFi pairing is delightful. Android users often gravitate toward Phonak’s universal connectivity.
  • Your day-to-day environments. Restaurants, churches, classrooms, and cars all demand different things from a hearing aid.
  • Your accessory needs. If you watch a lot of TV, all three brands offer streamers, but the experience differs. If you need a remote microphone for one-on-one, Phonak Roger is the gold standard.
  • Your aesthetic preferences. All three offer slim RICs, custom in-the-ear options, and color choices.

The 60-Day Trial

Once we’ve narrowed down the right device, the 60-day satisfaction period gives you time to wear it in real situations — not just in our office. If something isn’t right, we adjust the programming, swap the device, or work with you on alternatives. The goal is your hearing, not a sale.
