Phonak Lyric is the only extended-wear hearing aid on the market. It’s placed deep in your ear canal by an audiologist and stays in 24/7 for several months at a time — no daily insertion, no batteries to change, completely invisible from outside. It’s a remarkable option for the right candidate, and not the right fit for everyone. Here’s the patient guide.
What Lyric Is
Lyric is a small hearing aid placed about 4 millimeters from your eardrum by an audiologist trained in the procedure (Florida Hearing Matters is a certified Lyric provider). Once placed, it stays in continuously — while you sleep, exercise, shower, even swim with caution. The device contains a battery that lasts several months. When the battery runs low, the audiologist removes the device and places a fresh one.
Because Lyric sits so deep in the ear canal, it uses the natural acoustics of your own ear to shape sound — no external microphones, no app, no Bluetooth. The result is sound that feels remarkably natural because it follows your ear’s own anatomy.
Who Lyric Works For
- Adults with mild-to-moderately-severe hearing loss — the device’s amplification range matches this band well.
- Patients who prioritize cosmetic invisibility — Lyric is genuinely undetectable from outside the ear.
- Patients who don’t want to manage a daily-wear device — if remembering to put hearing aids in, charge them, and clean them sounds exhausting, Lyric eliminates that entirely.
- Active adults — you can exercise, run, sweat, and shower without removing the device.
- People who hate “hearing aids” for cosmetic or psychological reasons — the invisibility removes that barrier completely.
Who Lyric Doesn’t Work For
- Severe or profound hearing loss — outside Lyric’s amplification range
- Atypical ear canal anatomy that prevents safe deep placement
- Active middle-ear or external ear conditions, recurrent infections, or perforated eardrum
- Frequent water exposure (regular swimming or diving) — Lyric tolerates showering but not full submersion
- Patients who want extensive Bluetooth streaming, app control, or directional features — Lyric trades those for invisibility and natural sound
The Subscription Model
Lyric is sold as an annual subscription rather than a one-time purchase. You pay a yearly fee that includes all device replacements, fittings, and adjustments throughout the year. This is different from traditional hearing aids, which you buy once and own.
The subscription model usually works out to be similar in total cost to traditional hearing aids over a 5–7 year period, with the convenience advantage of never needing to buy or charge anything. We can walk through the specific numbers for your situation during your fitting consultation.
What the Lyric Experience Is Like
Most patients say the first few hours are a bit unfamiliar — you can feel the device in your canal, similar to wearing earplugs — but that sensation fades within 1–3 days as your ear acclimates. After that, most patients report forgetting they have it in.
The device is removed and replaced by your audiologist roughly every 2–4 months, depending on use. The replacement appointment takes about 20 minutes per ear.

How to Find Out If Lyric Is Right for You
Lyric candidacy requires a physical evaluation of your ear canal anatomy alongside your audiogram. Not every ear is shaped to safely accommodate the device. The first step is a hearing evaluation, followed by a Lyric-specific screening if you’re interested.
We offer a free Lyric trial — come in, get screened, and try the device in your own ear so you can decide whether it’s right for your life before committing.
